Caring for Baby Teeth
Even though baby teeth are temporary, they play a crucial role in a child’s development and should not be overlooked!
Why Are Baby Teeth Important?
Baby teeth are an important part of a child’s development. Teeth help babies transition to solid foods. They also assist with speech development and pronunciation. Baby teeth act as guides for the permanent teeth to help them come in properly and start children off on the right path towards a lifetime of great oral health.
How to Keep Baby Teeth Healthy
Did you know that baby teeth are more susceptible to cavities and decay? Because of this, it’s vital to take proper care of your child’s baby teeth in order to preserve their dental health. Before your child gets any teeth, you can start their at-home oral hygiene routine by gently cleaning their gums with a wet washcloth to remove any harmful bacteria. Once your child gets their first tooth in, you can start a more advanced oral healthcare regimen:
- Avoid putting your child to bed with a bottle–Juice, milk, and formula can collect around your child’s teeth and cause severe cavities
- Use an infant toothbrush and baby-approved toothpaste to brush your child’s teeth
- Start flossing when your child has two teeth that touch
- When your child turns one, take them to their initial dental visit to set a benchmark for their dental health
Biannual Dental Cleanings & Exams
After your child turns one and has a few teeth, it’s time to introduce them to the dentist. The sooner you start taking them, the easier it is for your child to get used to the dental office, the equipment, and the team. By checking in twice a year with your dentist, they can help keep your child’s baby teeth in great shape and catch any potential issues while they’re still small!
