How to Help Your Child Brush Their Teeth
Kids who learn good dental habits at a young age will usually carry those habits throughout their lifetime. Some kids may stubbornly resist some habits like brushing, but learning to guide your children towards healthy dental habits will help combat tooth decay as well as set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
This is why at Dental Solutions of Avon we are so committed to youth dental care. We also understand that sometimes it can be hard for parents to instill these habits with their kiddos. Here are some ways we think it might help to teach your child to brush their teeth.
Sing a Song
If your kids are still too young to brush their own teeth (or at least too young to do a proper job) then try singing a song to them while you brush. Try to make the song two minutes long and get them to learn that once the song is over, so is the brushing! If your kid is old enough to brush but is resisting, then try getting them an electric toothbrush. Some parents have discovered that their kids hate brushing, but really love using an electric toothbrush! There are kid versions with fun characters on them for children.
Read Stories About Brushing
There are many dental books for children these days. You can find a book about the Berenstain Bears, Elmo, Dora the Explorer, or even one called Black-Toothed Ruth Black. The more you read to your children about good habits like brushing, the more they’ll start to get used to the idea and will understand it is a part of everyday life.
Make it Look Like Fun
Get mom and dad together and have a brushing party. Dance and laugh while brushing, and show your kids how much fun it can be! But tell your kiddos they can only join the brushing party if they can brush for two whole minutes. Time them and dance away!
